Garden Fresh Celery Soup

Over the years, I have use the condensed version of cream of celery soup to make a variety of recipes. It's a great way to pull off a quick meal, create a gravy or make a potpie.
This is not that lack luster, artificial cream of celery soup. This is a simple easy recipe that both my hubby and I now look forward to for lunch or dinner.

But let me start by saying, I love freshly grown celery. My Dad has always grown it and it is a deep rich green color, unlike the one you find in the store.

Here's a peek at what's left growing in the garden now.

In the past, my Dad has been my fresh produce stop and I always take some of the fresh celery because I love the leaves in salads. Well this year, I planted my own and happily froze a giant bag of it too. I'll need to be thinking about drying some, also.

If you have never tried freshly grown celery, I urge you to give it a try. The flavor is much different than the store bought. Oh those leaves, make sure to use them because they are so full of flavor!!!It's a great addition to soups, stews and salads. I especially love it in bean salads.

Quick tip-You'll need an immersion blender to pull this off. Good, now we're ready.

Garden Fresh Celery Soup

Ingredients
2 cans of broth -chicken or veggie
1 cup of chopped fresh celery stalks and all those leaves
(Honestly , you can add as much as you want, go ahead and add two cups if you have it)
1/2 of an onion diced
salt and pepper to taste
2 tbl olive oil
1 tbl of butter
3 tbl of milk, cream or half and half
(I always have half and half in the house for my coffee)

Sauté the chopped celery and onions in the oil and butter until they are soft and cooked through. Add the broth. Warm through. Add 3 tbl of cream or milk or half and half, something to boost the creamy factor being careful not to bring it to a boil. Blend.  Finish with salt and pepper.

We loved this so much I even canned 2 jars for the pantry, minus the milk/half and half.

Funtastic Friday # 596

 Time to PARTY!

DIY Cedarwood Yard and Garden Spray

A few years ago I bought a non toxic outdoor Pest Control for my yard and garden. We live in Florida and often have a moment in the year where ants get into the house. We also have chiggers, fleas and ticks about the yard which are especially concerning to me for the dog.
I purchased Wondercide Outdoor Pest Control from Amazon. It comes in a broadcast sprayer and it worked amazing. The problem is that it's $40.00 a pop and has to be reapplied after rain. Although that's not an awful lot of $$$ I do try to DIY so I gave it a shot and here's my recipe.

I like to make up a few batches at a time so they are ready when I need them. BTW, these cost less than  $2.00 each. Score.

Funtastic Friday # 593

Let's get THIS PARTY started!

Yarrow -Pretty Medicinal Perennial

I am not a doctor and anything you read here is for entertainment value only. This is my story and research into this pretty flower and herb. There is much more information about the benefits of this herb but this is just my little story and a few fun pics.

For over 35 years I have played with essential oils , often making various potpourris and such, so growing my own medicinals seemed like the next  natural step.

A few years back, I began digging into medicinal herbs, collecting books about herbs and their benefits and even created an apothecary piece in my home.

It now holds an enormous collection of medicinal herbs, (most of which are organically grown by me), essential oils, tinctures, powders, salves, ointments and various ingredients that help me create the potions I love to use.
Years ago, I grew yarrow as a cut flower. These days, what attracted me immediately to "Yarrow", was it's ability to stop bleeding and it's healing power. It's been used for thousands of years and even  going back to the ancient Greeks, who say that Achilles used this amazing herb on the battlefield to stop bleeding and heal wounds.
It's an anticoagulant, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and an antibacterial, making it a perfect addition to your first aid kit. I always keep it in my travel first aid kit too! And, and, AND !!!!!,  it can be taken internally and externally to stop bleeding. I mean wow. See why I now have a home apothecary piece of furniture in my home.
Just the other day, my hubby came in with a pretty ugly cut and we ran out to the yarrow plant and I chewed up a few leaves to activate the healing and applied it to his cut. Bingo it stopped the bleeding.

I have added yarrow oil to my homemade triple antibiotic cream, to my lip balm recipe and my magnesium foot cream recipe.

Last year , I added yarrow to my garden and I was able to hang dry enough yarrow to make an infused oil and have enough to keep in a pretty jar. And my plant is organic since I don't spray harmful chemicals. THIS year, the yarrow is insane. It's growing quicker than I can process it! I have taken off shoots of this perennial plant probably 25 times and have planted it all around my yard and created a great number of pots to sell.
Most recently,  I added  yarrow to our sweet, little, chick's feed as a way to help boost their immune system.
Cut flowers, yes yarrow makes it's way into all the vases in my house. I mean those lacey white flowers? And the flowers last a good amount of time, without the need for additional trimming to keep them looking their best.
Make note that the white variety is considered the most medicinal.

Yarrow is a great addition to your home garden for many reasons including it's ease of growth and beauty .
I hope this inspires your curiosity into medicinal herbs.

With love and gratitude

Michele
